Week 4_02/ 04/ 2016_HUMAN

Searching around on the fifth floor of Pius Xii Memorial Library, there is one book that caught my attention while walking through the GN 281 aisle, it is called HUMAN by Robert Winston and Dr. Don E. Wilson. HUMAN was published by the Smithsonian Institution in October 4, 2014, printed in China. The book was placed in the oversize section of the library, weighted 5.8 lbs. with 12 inches in length, 10.3 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in height, standing up. Covered by a hardcover, the book sure had intended to last for decade, the cover was protected with an extra layer of plastic to add the glossiness to the book. The heaviness of the book itself came from the 512 pages of thick, colored, nouveau paper (modern paper), which are extremely durable and hard to be torn apart. The book did not stated it font, but it seem to be Time New Roman, and the text seem to be just like any typical encyclopedia, small and try to squeeze in as many information as possible. At the margins of the book, the name of the chapter was written for easier access for the reader.
Since the book itself was called HUMAN, written by two doctors, and published by Smithsonian Institution, the world biggest museum and research center, we can easily figure out that the intended audience for this book are either people who wanted to have more knowledge toward our body, mind, and spirit such as students, or professor who try to broader their knowledge and research. Once again, with the hardcover, unlike many occasionally-flipped-through coffee table book, HUMAN was meant to last for a long period of time. Laminated on the cover, the book can resist minor scratch or damage, perfect for people who prefer keeping it over the year. With that being said, this book can also be read by anyone, including kid. First of all, the book provided picture of everything that included in each chapter, aiding the audience in creating an image as they read. Secondly, the language in the book, although included many scientific vocabulary, can be understand if the reader continue on reading the book as the following chapter support the previous one. All in all, this book are mainly for educational purpose, some can consider it a piece of collection, and can be read by any type of audience, who either devote themselves in understanding the information provided in the book, or just to have some more knowledge for future reference.

  2. From the description of your book (very large, heavy, thick glossy paper), it sounds like it's a coffee table book. Not a very informative comment, but I love these types of books. Very high quality and substantial, I love collecting these books!

  3. As Ms. Berry said, I do believe that this is sort of a collective book. I have seen many of these types of publications and they are usually sitting within an office of someone or on an individuals table!
