The
book I had chosen is called The Second Jungle Book written by Rudyard Kipling.
The tales in The Second Jungle Book was written around the year of 1894 and
published one year later (1895). Covering two hundred and thirty eight pages it
includes five stories about Mowgil, they are fables using animals in an
anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The book is about nine inches in
length and about five inches in diameter. It has a hard blue cover with a Cobra
snake wrapped around a sphere on the front cover; it was made to withhold
strong percussions. It looks as if the pages were made of gold when flattened
together giving it the texture and shininess of gold. The pages inside don’t
appear glossy but do feel glossy with burnt effects on the edges of every page,
we can tell that even the pages were meant to withstand any accidents that may
happen such as spilling coffee or crumbs on it while reading while giving it an
older style to let the reader feel it is an authentic book. It also has black and white pictures on
several of the pages. The writing inside the book is 10 fonts, Times New Roman
writing and spaced about 1.15 inches.
The
book was written 121-years-ago and is relatively in good condition for a book
that old. Some of the characteristics that were mentioned about the book in the
previous paragraph tell us a lot about the audience the book was trying to
target. Due to the hard covering and glossy appeared pages we know it was meant
to withhold any strong hits taken upon it, we were able to tell the book is
trying to target a broad audience from college students to regular people who
just like to read.
Although
the book uses animals as an example to show morals and the effects of morals on
“non-humans”, people may think it is a book for children when in reality it
isn’t at all. Sometimes it helps us better understand situations when looking
at it from a different perspective, and to set animals as an example to show
what true morals are it can open up the eyes to many. So that being said, I felt
that the material inside was something very unique and important to us that the
hard covering and glossy pages were made purposely for this book to last such a
long time.
