Week 6_2/20/16_Let it Go

When Elsa accidentally exposes her powers in from of everyone in the castle, she flees towards isolation on top of a snowy mountain and sings about her sorrows. She despairs because shutting off everyone around her and bottling up her feelings inside to control her powers now has been for nothing. However, now that everyone knows about the powers, she doesn’t have to do that anymore. She can now “let it go” and explore her powers and her emotions. She becomes excited and happy as there is now nothing holding her back from doing whatever she wants. She declares that she doesn’t care what people say, she will do what she wants to. What happened in the movie is mentioned here because the audience of the song is the viewers of the movie. They all know what Elsa’s been through and what she’s going through now as she sings. They all connect with the song because of the character. That is why the audience is very important for this song; it is literally a part of a movie.
The freedom Elsa was enjoying is expressed through the very style of the song in Alex Boyé’s version while adding other aspects. This cover creatively Africanized the original version and most of the singers were children, refusing to conform to what’s popular. Moreover, because children were singing, the message changed into a song about growing up. The audience views them as kids, but as the song goes on, they see their talents and respect them more. It also contrasts from the original as was sad in the beginning but this song is constantly upbeat. Rather than despairing in the first part, it sounds like Alex rejoices that she is no longer the person she was before when she sings about keeping in her emotions and being isolated. Also, while Elsa was all alone in the mountain, Alex is surrounded by friends. When she says the words “here I am and here I’ll stay,” it rings differently from when Elsa sings them as she sings about how happy she is that she can do all of the things she wants to with her friends.
All in all, they both bring out their messages by showing what they went through before and what they will do from now.
