For this week blog, I would like to write a rhetorical analysis about "Iowa is too politically correct". As the name of the letter stated, this analysis will be about how Iowa is too politically correct. In this article, Charles Braun reveal how politically correctness can be use as an excuse for many different wrongly actions to by pass life, and how the people had been indoctrinated by the government. The letter's audience is mainly adult, as this is focusing on political problems
In this article, Charles Braun listed many problems and situations where the application of political correct do not fit or make sense. But before doing so, Charles briefly stated that the letter he wrote is not a hate speech, and that hatred was not the reason that the letter was written. Following that idea, Charles then ask the audience a question, and tackle the point, which in term, proved that we had been indoctrinated by the society we lived in. With that being said, Charles also make a point about how people with high authority have the power to decide whether a specific problem is good or bad. An example is sustainability, "take sustainability. A possible one- or two -degree temperature increase a hundred years from now is cause for panic, but an unsustainable federal deficit that could collapse our economy in a few year is ignored".
Another example that support the idea of how politically correct had gone passed the bother of common sense in a social life is the availability of free condom at school. People go to school to obtain knowledge, why not teaching them about birth control but rather providing free condom. Charles stated that this problem had evoked his anger and so does other parent who trusted the school in taking care of their children, only to find out that they are being treated like animals.
All in all, Charles Braun had done a great job in waking up the people of Iowa, provided useful fact and information in supporting his claim, and showing them the society that is too dependent on the political correctness they living in.
Braun, Charles. Iowa State is too Politically Correct. Iowa State Daily. Web. NP. April 2016
Dang, nice work! Firstly, I wanted to address how Braun supports his claims. Though his claims come off as harsh and hard to explain, I think he does a good job of giving examples that relate back to modern life. In this way, he's making his argument relatable, thus relating to the audience. However, I don't agree with some tactics he used here. For example, I thought that when he said that political correctness is against common sense was completely incorrect. He cites the government and mainstream as brain-washing us, but at the same time, many of our "common sense" and traditions have developed over the years for a reason. The biggest benefit of political correctness that I can think of is public safety and protection against hate crimes. It's true that a lot of our traditions today are convoluted, but political correctness is not one of them.
