Before I actually
knew what I was doing, I had defined rhetoric as being able to effectively
influence those who are reading the paper you have created and apparently I
wasn't too far off of what the actual definition was. But based on the
experience I have had within this wonderful class, I would now define rhetoric
as how we use our language in our everyday life to try and persuade or
influence the given audience within your paper, speech, or blog post that we
are in the process of making and we use it from start to finish to help fully make
our point. The only things that have really changed within my definition of
rhetoric was the wording and depth of it all. What really didn’t change within
my definition of rhetoric was the main idea of it. I kind of had an idea of
what rhetoric was before coming into this class because of my past composition
classes in high school. The two specific instances that I have personally experienced
within this class have been assignment one and the big paper. Out of the two, I
favored assignment one more because I was able to talk about something that I
truly cared about and show why it was something that needed to be brought to
the attention of others. As for the big paper, I felt like I couldn’t persuade or
influence people as easily due to how limited our options were.
I also had a little bit of knowledge about rhetoric before this class so it was a bit easier for me to understand it. I think the level of change you went through in terms of understanding rhetoric was about the same as me. All of the things you mentioned helped me too. I thought practicing the rhetorical devices in real life was the most helpful and the They Say I Say book helped a bit as well.
